이번 조치에 대해 야권은 일제히 지나치게 잔인한 조치라며, "연방의회의 입법 절차를 거쳐야 한다"는 주장을 내세웠다.
이와 함께 난민 전문 변호사들이 집단적으로 정부의 이번 조치에 대해 "위헌 소송을 제기할 것"이라고 밝히고 나섰다.
이에 대해 피터 더튼 이민장관은 국내의 난민변호사들을 지목해 "국익을 무시하는 이들은 호주인답지 못하다"고 직격했다.
피터 더튼 이민장관은 또 "이들 변호사들이 믿기 어려울 정도의 상실감을 호주 국민들에게 안기려 한다"고 불만을 터뜨렸다.
