Barzani was the Kurdistan Democratic Party's candidate for the post, and he received 68 votes out of 81.

The second largest Kurdish political party in the KR, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan reportedly boycotted the session  in a tit-for-tat move, as KDP refused to vote for a PUK governor for the Province of Kirkuk.

Nechirvan Barzani is the nephew of the former KR president Masoud Barzani.
