Losing baby Bella Source: Ronak

Ronak speaks about the heartbreak of losing a baby on her journey to a safer place, a dangerous sea crossing, days of endless walking, unscrupulous smugglers, chaos on trains and near suffocation in a van.

As Australia prepares for the special humanitarian intake of twelve thousand people from Syria, record numbers of those fleeing the conflict continue to make the perilous journey to safer shores in Europe.

The United Nations says so far this year nearly three quarters of a million asylum seekers have crossed the Mediterranean to Europe.

In October - more than 218,000 people made the trip - an all-time monthly high.

The vast majority have crossed from Turkey to Greece in unseaworthy craft. Just over 3,400 people have died making that trip so far in 2015.

The horrors of each person's journey are different.

SBS Radio has followed a young Kurdish woman on her long trek from Syria to Germany -- through eight countries.
