
Sydney Cove, New South Wales, Australia, 1788, (1886). Sydney Cove is a bay on the southern shore of Sydney Harbour. It was the site chosen in 1788 by Captain Arthur Phillip for the establishment of the first British colony in Australia, which later became the city of Sydney. The date of the colony's founding, 26 January, is today celebrated as Australia Day.
