The collection 'Weightless’ created by the Australian student of Macedonian and Serbian decent, Darija Milevska and presented at the 2019 Melbourne Fashion Week, is very topical and intriguing. It seeks to raise awareness of sustainability, by re-purposing plastic waste. "It has been developed by draping through the single use plastic bottles and using a Madame Grés draping technique on the dresses. The bottles have then been embellished with beads so that they almost look like jewelry that shows that even a plastic bottle can be given value. All the fabric used on the dresses is dead-stock. For the undergarments that also double up as swimsuits I have made a collage out of waste, scanned it and used Photoshop to edit. This has then been printed on a recycled fabric," says Darija Milevska. This third-year student at Holmesglen Institute in Melbourne hopes to make a contribution towards achieving a more sustainable Australian fashion industry.
