The car rampage in Melbourne has been a sobering reminder for many, of the vulnerability of public spaces. Questions are being asked about what more can be done to fortify places of mass gathering and stop vehicle attacks. Places of mass gathering are now potential targets for attackers and many of these sites are accessible by car or truck. In parts of Melbourne, concrete structures have been rolled out to prevent cars driving through pedestrian thoroughfares, including on Flinders Street. Victoria's Premier Daniel Andrews says he is prepared to receive criticism over safety measures that he says can be unsightly, but are necessary.
