Year 2020: Five most famed Nepalese faces

Year 2020 has been extraordinary in many ways for all of us. COVID-19 brought disruption all around the globe, and many people were unable to perform their usual routine. Amidst this gloom and doom, we have chosen five Nepali- who have shone a light and earned fame in this otherwise dull year.

Sapana Roka Magar

Sapana Roka Magar is a voluntary crematorium worker, who have been providing traditional Hindu funeral rites for abandoned and unidentified deceased bodies.

18-year-old Magar was chosen as 10 Women of 2020 by the BBC. Her team identifies and collects bodies from the streets or mortuaries and then are sent to postmortem examination. If the body remains unclaimed for 35 days, Magar’s team takes it to the crematorium and provides final rites as per Hindu religion.

She had gone through a period of homelessness a few years ago, and now to turn her life around to serve others has been quite extraordinary. She has been one of the inspiring characters for 2020.

 

Santosh Shah

Although he was not crowned as the winner of MasterChef UK, Santosh Shah was successful in introducing a variety of Nepali cuisine to the international audience. Born in Siraha district, Shah’s childhood days were quite difficult. He had worked as a laborer even when he was eleven years old due to financial stress in the family.

Shah ended up as the last three finalists in the popular reality shows. He made a variety of Nepali dishes, including Yomari, during his time in the MasterChef UK.

 

Arthur Gunn Dibesh Pokharel

Dibesh Pokharel aka Arthur Gunn was another reality TV star who became runner-up in American Idol. He went to the United States six years ago, but his interest in music stayed with him.\

Dibesh travelled around the US and busked on streets of many cities, including New York. Two years ago, he had released “Grahan” (Eclipse), a collection of Nepali songs. He has released his second album last July.

 

Bhim Niraula

Bhim Niraula rose into the popularity ladder with his song- Sunday Morning Love you. Originally penned for his wife, his catchy song was making several rounds after he sang during an audition for Britain Got Talent.

Niraula had also participated in India Got Talent in 2018.

 

Curtis Waters

Curtis Waters grew up in Canada and Germany and now is a well-famed singer as a result of his song stunnin’.

Born in Nepal, Waters’ real name is Abhinav Bastakoti. His musical journey started with Tik Tok videos but now has taken off on all the major social media platforms.
