Ban on selling low-dose codeine pills over the counter have come into effect from February 1, 2018 across Australia. The ban means people will now need to get a prescription from their doctor to access the tablets. The restriction applies to codeine-containing painkillers, including Panadeine, Nurofen Plus, Mersyndol; and cold and flu products like Codral and Demazin. Health Minister Greg Hunt says the plan will save the lives of up to 100 people who would otherwise died from codeine toxicity.
