British historian John Whelpton, who holds a PhD in Nepali political history from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, first visited Nepal in the 1970s. Since then, he has been actively involved in researching Nepali history and other academic activities. Whelpton, who is also the author of books such as ‘Jang Bahadur in Europe’ and ‘A History of Nepal’, was recently honoured by the Nepal government with the ‘Itihas Shiromani Baburam Acharya National Award’ for his significant contribution to the field of Nepalese history. Nepal correspondent Girish Subedi spoke with John Whelpton, focusing on the transformations in Nepali society from the time of Jung Bahadur’s visit to Britain to the present day, and the policies adopted by the parties after the declaration of the republic.
