Nepali mountaineer Purnima Shrestha has now climbed Mount Everest six times, including her latest ascent on May 20 this year. More than 270 climbers reached the summit within the same 24-hour period — the highest number ever recorded in a single day. Images and videos of long queues of climbers on the mountain circulated widely on social media and news, reigniting debate about overcrowding on Everest. Our Nepal correspondent Pratichya Dulal spoke with Shrestha about her firsthand experience of the crowds, the challenges they created and what it was like to summit on one of Everest’s busiest days.
