Sharma recommended for Chief Justice, seniority bypass raises questions

The Constitutional Council’s recommendation of Manoj Kumar Sharma for the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court during its meeting on Thursday, 7 May, has sparked debates in Nepal. To be appointed CJ, Sharma must now be endorsed by the Parliamentary Hearing Committee. The Constitutional Council’s recommendation breaks with the long-standing practice of appointing the senior-most judge as Chief Justice.
