Nepali radio shows starts in Darwin and Tasmania

Northern Territory's capital city Darwin and Tasmanian city of Hobart are getting new Nepali radio programs each. The language programs will focus on local community based news and information say the people behind the radio program. Punam Panta from the Tasmanian service and Nitesh Raj Panta from Darwin spoke to SBS Nepali about their work in bringing the radio programs to life.


According to recent census Nepali is second mostly used language other than English in Tasmania. The statistics reveal 1,647 people speak Nepali in Tasmania which is 0.3 % of the total population.

Where as 138 Nepali speakers reside in Darwin city alone according to the 2016 Australian census. Nepali students cover 17.1% of the total number of students in Charles Darwin University.

Two initiators of Nepali radio programs in two different places Punam Panta from Tasmania and Nitesh Raj Panta from Darwin spoke with SBS Nepali.
