Peter Dutton has been tipped as the next leader of the Liberal party - a decision that would cast him as the man responsible for resurrecting the party from the pain of its election loss.

The former police officer from Queensland would also be the first man not from New South Wales to lead the Liberal Party since Alexander Downer in 1995.
