A Man Called Yarra with (Robert Hillman) is the story of Stan Yarramunua. He's an artist, musician, actor, social worker and businessman. Stan and his brother and sisters grew up in Swan Hill, Victoria. For most of his childhood he spent his days following his father around from city to town, living on the road and the streets. Life was about survival. His mother is an Aboriginal woman who missed out on bringing up her children because his father kept running off with them. Stan Yarramunua had to learn how to survive and this meant doing what he could to feed himself and his family. To Stan and his family there was a moral code to live by and that was about loyalty and there was no tolerance for racism. It was a hard upbringing for a child and this caught up with Stan later in life when he came to terms with his alcoholism, love and deep loss. Now he owns an art gallery in St Kilda and helps other men and women heal from addiction. Stan Yarramunua talks to NITV Radio about his survival and deep love for his family. A Man Called Yarra with (Robert Hillman) is available from Black Ink Books.
