People from across the nation met in Alice Springs last week to try to find a solution to the rising rates of suicides in Indigenous communities.
The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Suicide Prevention Conference brought academics and health workers and members of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to find a way to deal with the rising crisis of suicides in Australia.
Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows the overall rate of suicide for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples was twice that of non-Indigenous people.
What is more important is what is happening on the ground in families and looking at ways of prevention and support.
The conference created a national discussion about mental illness amongst First Nations communities with the view to solutions.
