A report released says Australia can do better on human rights and basic freedoms.


Amnesty International have released their annual Report into the State of the World's Human Rights, analysing global human rights trends in one hundred and sixty countries.

International protection of human rights are unraveled with the federal government use of national security to justify policies for refugees and offshore processing, mandatory detention, boat pushbacks and indigenous imprisonment rates.

Indigenous Rights campaigner Roxanne Thomas says Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth represent more than half of the people incarcerated in Australia.

She says that setting justice targets to Close the Gap on Indigenous Disadvantage ensures a holistic approach to health and wellbeing for Indigenous people and reduce the rates of imprisonment
