“We developed this art project as a way to develop traditional story-telling and passing on knowledge using a contemporary medium” - Renee Mann, yourtown Indigenous Programs Manager.

Eighteen students from Woodridge, Park Ridge and Bundamba State High Schools worked together under the guidance of their Indigenous Mentors to tell their story and experience in collaborative art pieces around the 2019 NAIDOC theme saying I DO to Voice. Treaty and Truth. Working together for a better future.

The collaborative art project started earlier this year when 30 wedding gowns were donated to the organisation yourtown in Kingston.

Yourtown Indigenous Programs Manager Renee Mann saw in these donations an opportunity to promote and acknowledge Indigenous culture and story-telling through a whimsical art project focusing on the theme of 2019 NAIDOC week.

“This is an exciting project for our yourtown team not just because of the scope of the art pieces, but also because of the valuable conversations that we were able to facilitate with the students.

Giving them the opportunity to discuss current issues impacting on their lives and culture,” Ms Mann said as the project was coming to its conclusion.

Three of the NAIDOC week inspired wedding gowns created by the teens will be exhibited as part of the Art from the Margins Gallery and Studios in Brisbane from the 13th of July till the 24th of August.
