Frances Rings, chats to NITV Radio about her inaugural year as Artistic Director Bangarra Dance Theatre, her latest work Yuldea and how her family’s personal connection inspired this new body of work.

In her inaugural year as Artistic Director, Frances Rings, a proud Wirangu and Mirning woman from the West Coast of South Australia, wanted to choreograph and create a piece that was inspired by her family’s connection to country.

The body of work titled Yuldea is a deeply personal ceremonial dance of history and heritage, which awakens the earth and sky to tell the story of the Aṉangu people from the Great Victorian Desert and explorers the moment traditional life collided with the industrial pressures of a growing nation in Yuldea.

The music for Yuldea weaves contemporary and traditional, with the score composed by Worimi man Leon Rodgers and a creative collaboration with electronic pop due Electric Fields who have created the opening piece titled Super Nova and collaborating with Leon on the final piece which is about celebrating the incredible site of Yuldea and how its kept alive today in the memory of generations that ensure it is cared for and protected.

Yuldea opens at Sydney opera house on June 14 and will be touring nationally in Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and wrapping up in Bendigo in October. You can get tickets from here.
