Conversation with Isobel Morphy-Walsh -Senior Koorie Programs Officer Museum Victoria - talking about Blak Night festival, a celebration of First Nations cultures in Melbourne currently showing at Melbourne Museum.
Blak Night is the name of Melbourne Museum’s participation in the iconic 2019 White Night festival.
In our conversation, Isobel Morpy -Walsh (Blak Night curator) explained that together with her colleagues they wanted to highlight different things.
“We talked about the way in which even the name of the festival came about. So, we wanted to come out with a point of difference and cultural flare,” Isobel Morphy-Walsh said.
The event curator also stated that while putting Blak Night together they focussed on highlighting something that wasn’t properly represented: Indigenous cultures.
Unlike previous iterations when White Night was a one-night festival, this year the event runs for several days starting on Thursday the 22/08/2019 at 7 pm through to Saturday 24/08/2019 at 2am.
The family friendly Blak Night component features outdoor and indoor events. Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy free entry to the science and Life galleries and Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre where a major installation celebrating Victoria’s 44 Aboriginal languages can be seen.
