The Labor Party is promising a parliamentary commission of inquiry into a controversial water buyback if it wins the May 18 election.

One of the questions that remains unanswered is actually who benefited from the profits made on a 2017 water buyback approved by the then-water minister Barnaby Joyce.

Labor made a request for the complete release of all the documents associated with the deal but the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources refused.

That saw Labor promise an inquiry but only into the 2017 deal and not its own water buybacks

The Coalition maintains an inquiry isn't needed because it's already asked the Commonwealth Auditor-General to investigate.
