“It’s a very exciting season because last year we weren’t able to play here in Melbourne in front of our fans and Boomers family; and also to have them come at the games and experience the Boomers atmosphere”- Cayla George, captain Melbourne Boomers.
The Melbourne Boomers draw a massive crowd – the largest of any team, hence COVID and no crowds was tough for them last season as they played in a hub in Queensland.
Boomers captain, Cayla George expects the WNBL 2021-2022 season to be very competitive and super tough on the courts. But, the team is up to the challenge and they are very excited that we are getting back to normality.
“Am more excited for the people of Melbourne, who have really done it tough to be able to come out and really experience the home games and get them up to Boomers’ family; I think it is going to be the most exciting part,” Cayla George said.

In the coming season, the Boomers will first play against the Bendigo Spirit on the 8th of December. For their first home game, in their new home in Parkville, they’ll face off with Southside on the 11th of December.
“It will be very exciting as we’ll be able to show off our new stadium, where we’ll play our home games this year. It is a great place with great history. It is also the home of the Melbourne Vixens, so it is sort of a female sports hub. Which is really cool.”
Cayla George is 2 times Olympian with the Opals in 2016 and 2021; Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist in 2018 and 3 times WNBL champion respectively in 2015,2016, and 2018.
She says she owes her successful sporting career to strong family support especially from her husband, a proud Torres Strait Islander man who is also passionate about Indigenous issues working with youth.
