The Queensland Poetry Festival 'Distant Voices' is the biggest festival in Australia and welcomes respected Poets Lionel Fogarty and Theresa Creed to the stage.

Yugambeh Elder and respected poet Lionel Fogarty will share his works at the QLD Poetry Festival for the Avant Gaga Reading in Brisbane this year.

Lionel Fogerty has been involved in the Poetry Festival for a few years now, choosing to read his new and selective poems at the Judith Wright Centre hosted by The Australian Poetry.

Mr Fogerty writes about the political understanding in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community which include Land Rights, Justice, Deaths in Custody and revitalising our people within jails, programs and languages.

"Schools in the cities and in the communities, need to have principles of educational literacy with first and foremost Indigenous writings and readings, it should be compulsory"

Avant Gaga Reading is apart of this years QLD Poetry Festival being held at the Judith Wright Centre in Brisbane and hosted by Poetry editor and director Toby Fitch.

Lionel Fogerty told NITV Radio that "Poetry is some sort of music in Aboriginal Culture"

His works are in line to give resolutions to things in political and cultural writings with a realistic kinda meaning in it, He also honors stories that are unforgotten.

"With my new and selective writings I think that this is a presentation of helping people that you don't have to stick in the same old Shakespearian and western style of writing."-Lionel Fogerty

QLD Poetry Festival welcomes respected elder of the Pitta Pitta and Mayi Yupi Nations of North West Queensland, Theresa Creed to share her works at this 4 day event.

Theresa will be reading her poems as part of the program Talking up: Poetry reading at the Judith Wright screening room in Brisbane.

From an early age Theresa loved English and writing at school, she was really glad that she was able to express herself through writing.

A passionate writer with honest heartfelt words, Theresa says her poetry works speak about "Healing, Liberation, Emancipation, mental slavery, stolen generation, generational trauma and happiness in general".

Theresa will present works about The Creation, her Mother's story and Land rights.

"Palm Island is the one that's weighing on my heart at the moment and I've done a dedication to Palm Island, I also got some paintings, first time I'm doing some paintings so the paintings will go with the poetry"- Theresa Creed, Poet

Theresa says that she is wanting to write a book of her works in the future, which will highlight a collection of who she is, stories of her people and things that she see wrong in this country like injustice.

She has a strong connection to the environmental issues of today, especially about how much rubbish is littered into ocean.

Talking up: Poetry reading is co presented by ATSICHS and will feature readings by Theresa Creed, Kerry Loughrey and Kit Kelen
