Facebook will ban foreign political advertising and introduce fact checking during the federal election. A move designed to tackle fake news and foreign meddling.
The social media giant has come under fire for not doing enough to limit foreign interference, especially in US and European elections in recent year.
In a statement, Facebook’s local director of policy Mia Garlick said "It will apply to ads we determine to be coming from foreign entities that are of an electoral nature, meaning they contain references to politicians, parties or election suppression. "
