Health workers are warning of a looming crisis in aged care services for Aboriginal Australians, saying the lack of culturally appropriate care is not just in remote communities, but in metropolitan areas as well.

Service providers in Australian cities say they are struggling to find the right aged care services for Indigenous seniors, with many left to suffer neglect, racism and financial abuse.

Concerns over racism are a factor, as many Aboriginal Australians now needing aged care were once members of the Stolen Generation – forcibly removed from their families as children.

While the royal commission has been focusing on aged care in remote communities, the barriers for Aboriginal seniors extend into the cities.
