As the nation gears up to farewell 2018 and usher in 2019, organizers in Sydney say the fireworks display over the harbour will be the best ever.

Every year the Sydney fireworks display is a New Year's Eve highlight viewed around the world.

This year there are a few more additions to the line-up. For the first time there will be a "Calling Country" segment just after 9:00pm.

This segment will include images of Australia's Indigenous heritage being projected onto the pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

In the Victorian capital, the fireworks display has been designed to be viewed from a distance. The 10-minute show will be set to the music of Indigenous rapper Adam Briggs.

Adelaide, Brisbane and all other major cities will also stage spectacular displays and events to  mark NYE.

Security majors have been heightened in major Australian cities.
