On World Indigenous Peoples Day Dr Hannah McGlade, Senior Indigenous Research Fellow at Curtin University, said it is urgent to close the gap in Indigenous incarceration and stop all forms of violations of Indigenous peoples’ rights; especially women and children’s rights.
In our conversation, Dr McGlade stressed that the International Day of World Indigenous Peoples is a significant day.
It is important because Indigenous people are still fighting for Human Rights. Indigenous people are also still lagging behind in all social-economic indicators.
Thea academic says many of these issues and gaps have been raised with the Australian government time and again. They have also been brought to the attention of the United Nations Human Rights Commission.
Of particular concern on this day, is the rate of Indigenous incarceration that has reached alarming and disproportionate rates.
Dr McGlade also mentioned increased violations of women and children’s rights as an area of high concern.
Dr Hannah McGlade also confirmed that Curtin University is about to release a final report on Indigenous femicides as part of its Deathscapes project.
