Lidia Thorpe will lead the first large scale public Anzac Style dawn service for First Nations heroes and victims this January 26.

The former Greens MP for Northcote has called for a large-scale event on January 26 in remembrance of First Peoples who fought in the frontier wars and those who died in widespread massacres that occurred across Australia during colonisation.

The inaugural Anzac style dawn service will take place at a known burial site of Aboriginal people killed in the colonial era.

The former Greens MP says holding such an event is a respectful way of reminding everyone in Australia that January 26 cannot continue to be seen as a day of celebration.

The former MP says she has received widespread support from the community including from elders. She also says her initiative is gaining traction.

Other leaders in NSW and WA support her action and they propose holding similar events in their respective communities.
