The State Library of NSW is letting people explore Indigenous landmarks on a new platform.


A perfect example of taking language and culture into the future using a digital plataform is Weemala- meaning Big lookout.

 

An experiment complied by the State Library of NSW- DX Lab.

Weemala is a digital drop in and interactive map using one hundered year old survey data from the Royal Anthropological Society of Australasia.

 

Mapping the locations and meaning of Indigenous place names in New South Wales.

Weemala tells the story simply and is an important tool that keeps language and traditional place names alives.

 

Indigenous Digital Services manager Kirsten Thorpe says the documentation of place names and their meanings adds another layer to people's understanding.

 

Paula Bray DX Lab Leader at State Library NSW says the Weemala Project has been designed so it can be built on, discussions can me made about it and more detail can be added to the map.
