Research by major insurance company reveals an alarming number of Australian motorists embark on holiday trips while ill prepared and they are prone to avoidable dangerous distractions.
The research reveals that 90% of Australians plan to go on a road trip at some stage this year and almost 1 in 2 Australians (48%) plan to hit the road these Easter holidays alone.
Despite the undisputed Australian love of the great open road the research also uncovered some concerning realities.
A big percentage of motorists hit the road totally unprepared for any mishaps.
27% of Australian motorists don’t know how to change a tyre, 34% don’t know what to do in the instance of their engine overheating and a surprising 18% of women and 11% of men have run out of petrol on the road.
It also appeared that a good number of Australians Motorists are ill-prepared to face distractions on the road.
Motorists, especially, those with young children are therefore encouraged to plan ahead for their safety. It is also recommended parents plan meticulously on how to occupy the young ones on road trips.
According to the research, one out of five (18%) parents find their children asking, “are we there yet?” at least twice an hour on a road trip, with one in four (22%) stating this happens within the first half an hour of the trip.
Faced with these statistics the insurer is calling on motorists to plan ahead and stay safe during these school and Easter holidays.
