The Queensland parliament will soon vote on a bill that favours community intervention over prison for teens.
Community safety becomes more that keeping people locked up in prisons.
it is also about saving lives.
Large amounts of money are spent on community safety to build prisons and could be better utilised if spent on diversionary and restorative justice measures designed to keep people out of prison and re-entering prison post release.
The Queensland Youth Justice and other Amendments Bill 2016 has been table in parliament to be passed, which could see laws steering children in diversionary programs.
Amnesty International's Roxanne Moore says Indigenous led initiatives and diversionry programs will address issues that children face that lead to incarceration.
