Seven areas, which are the combined equivalent of the size of South Australia, are being added to the Indigenous Protected Areas scheme.
The expansion of the Indigenous Protected Areas scheme includes land in the Central Australian Desert, tropical areas like the Arafura Swamp (home to the Ten Canoes movie) and extends as far as Cape York.
Patrick O’Leary of the Pew Charitable Trust says that through the Protected Areas scheme traditional owners decide independently to contribute some of their lands or sea to Australia’s protected area network.
It is expected that the expansion of the scheme will generate new jobs for Aboriginal people across Queensland, the Northern Territory and South Australia.
