Elisa Jane Carmichael’s ‘Shell Memories 2023’ is finalist in the 2023 NATSIAA awards, Australia’s richest art awards, presented by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) and Principal Partner Telstra on Larrakia Country (Darwin).

In a conversation with NITV Radio, Elisa Jane Carmichael said that ‘Shell Memories 2023’ was inspired by her recollections of shells stemming from a young age, as she grew up walking alongside middens created by her people’s Ancestors over thousands of generations.

She described this artwork as a double-sided cyanotype that provides a visual representation of the layers of middens on Quandamooka Country, honouring her people’s relationship with sustainable shellfish, gathering and feasting practices, which have been ongoing for millennia.‍
