In a conversation with NITV Radio, Elisa Jane Carmichael said that ‘Shell Memories 2023’ was inspired by her recollections of shells stemming from a young age, as she grew up walking alongside middens created by her people’s Ancestors over thousands of generations.
She described this artwork as a double-sided cyanotype that provides a visual representation of the layers of middens on Quandamooka Country, honouring her people’s relationship with sustainable shellfish, gathering and feasting practices, which have been ongoing for millennia.
