Nyinanhambu Barri (Our Place) – café and Pre-Loved Clothes shop hadn’t been open for a month when they were contracted to cater for a large crew of firefighters battling a giant blaze in northern NSW.
Nyinanhambu Barri (Our Place) – café and Pre-Loved Clothes shop is an initiative of the Amaroo Local Aboriginal Land Council (LACL).
When we caught up with Mark Davies, CEO of Amaroo LALC last Friday, November 22, Nyinanhambu Barri was serving 120 meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner for RFS personnel fighting the massive blaze at Carrai Creek near Walcha in northern NSW.
At the time of our conversation the giant fire was under control but still burning, keeping RFS personnel on their feet 24/7.
To keep them well fed and fit to fight, Mark Davies and his staff traveled 40 minutes for each meal – to cook and serve the meals or deliver the lunch packages.
A typical day for Mark and his team would start at 4 am and run until/or past 11 pm.
In our conversation, Mark Davies commended his colleagues at Amaroo LALC and the café staff as they all stepped up to the challenge of keeping the firies well fed and they’d also lend a hand when needed to combat the blaze.
