The Queensland Government's $21 million Stolen Wages Reparations Scheme is now open.
The scheme is receiving applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslander's whose wages or savings were withheld under the "The Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act, 1897."
Treasurer and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Curtis Pitt made the announcement, saying it was important to right the historical wrong.
The Stolen Wages Reparations Taskforce is headed by Human Rights Commissioner Mick Gooda, he says that the government can't pay entirely what was owed due to records being lost.
The QLD government will work on other projects of reconciliation to acknowledge the hard work that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have contributed to the building the infrastructure of Queensland.
The application process is open until 2018.
