Eight years ago a group of young women in Tennant Creek complained to their teacher about the lack of opportunities for girls to play sport in their community.
They decided to create a program called Stronger Sisters.
The program focuses on improving health and education outcomes for young women in the Northern Territory.
Stronger Sisters has been so successful that they recently won the NT John Fitzgerald Human Rights Youth Award.
Melanie Baldwin is the Australian Education Union NT Women's Officer.
Melanie has been a driving force behind the Stronger Sisters, and she spoke with Belinda Hoare about the award.
