As the International Year of Indigenous Languages draws to a close, the United Nations has heard of the substantial barriers indigenous speakers still face every day.
Today, there are about 7,000 languages in use around the world. But researchers estimate more than half the world's population uses just 23 of those languages.
However, among the world's 370 million indigenous people, there are more than 4,000 different languages in use.
The UN is urging the international community to keep rescuing and promoting indigenous languages well after the year's end.
