The newly elected secretary of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, Sally McManus, has called for raising the country's minimum wage by $45 a week.

Australia's trade unions have launched a campaign pushing for a major hike in the country's minimum wage.

Labor plans to back the Australian Council of Trade Unions in petitioning the Fair Work Commission for an increase, just one month after the independent umpire cut Sunday penalty rates.

The Fair Work Commission reviews the minimum wage every year. In reaction, the ACTU always makes a submission demanding a minimum wage rise. But this year's suggested $45 hike is one of its most ambitious to date.

Business groups say the ambitious wage request would be more than employers can afford.

The Government has not yet revealed its own submission to Fair Work.
