"We can no longer not talk about sexual health in our communities"
The latest report card on the nation's sexual health shows the number of Australians contracting H-I-V has stabilised.
According to the report about thousand people a year are still testing positive to the virus.
The report, by the University of NSW's Kirby Institute, says while new HIV infections have flattened out over the past three years, along with chlamydia in recent times, more Australians are being diagnosed with gonorrhoea and syphilis.
Rates of sexually transmitted infections remain much higher in Australia's indigenous population, with the HIV diagnosis rate increasing over the past five years.
Head of Infection, Immunity Aboriginal Health at the South Australian Medical and Health Research Institute James Ward, says unless elders continue to educate youth on discussing sexual health in a clinical setting there will be widespread infection of HIV and other STI'S in all communities.
