The Victorian government has rejected a proposal to rename Melbourne's iconic Yarra River to recognise its traditional owners.

A recent forum of business and government leaders is suggesting the Yarra River should be renamed 'Birrarung'  to acknowledge its Indigenous history.

The Victorian government argues the current name is itself "iconic", and says the government has already taken steps to protect the river's Indigenous heritage.
