Akala Newman is a Wiradjuri/Gadigal multi-disciplined performer, songwriter, educator and cultural producer

Akala Newman, a singer-songwriter of Wiradjuri/Gadigal heritage, is one of the most anticipated First Nations performers and participants in this year’s ACE (Arts and Cultural Exchange) flagship series ACE at Dusk.

In a conversation with NITV Radio Akala Newman said this year’s ACE program is the culmination of a 15-month residency at ACE under the mentorship of creative legends, musician June Jones and visual artist Serwah Attafuah.

She will take part in the events not only as this year's ACE First Nations Cultural Adviser but also as performer singing a new song produced by Wiradjuri woman Amy Flannery in partnership with June Jones.

The song will be performed by First Nations dance collective Lost All Sorts who will invite the audience to participate in a flash dance version of the choreography.

Akala is described by ACE organisers as a 'true triple threat, poised to ignite the night with her performance.

Her artistry draws from realms of fantasy and magic; she challenges conventions about contemporary First Nations womanhood and advocates for living by one's unique narrative.”
