Tangentyere Women’s Family Safety Group which also means ‘Working together’ is giving a voice to the silenced victims and spreading awareness of family and domestic violence in and around their communities in Alice Springs.
Shirleen Campbell's community is Hoppy’s Camp in Alice Springs. Shirleen is the Co-coordinator of the Family Prevention Program and core governments group The Tangentyere Women’s Family Safety Group.
Shirleen says 'What our group is originally about is tackling family and domestic violence on our town camp, we also want to be the voices for our urban and women’s around community and Australia wide.'
'We all need to sit down and listen because that what we used to do in the old days, when our Grandparents used to do that, was the best thing to do is listen, understand and respect the elders'
The group organised a successful march in July this year with over 300 people walking and standing strong for the Anti-Violence message in Alice Springs. Now Shirleen and the Tangentyere Women’s Family Safety Group are more determined and committed to taking their message to decision makers in Canberra.
Shirleen says the conversations are a key element to Indigenous culture.
