Young people have legal rights and it is important for them to understand the laws and what services are available for support.
One of the biggest problems for disadvantaged youth is having to deal with the legal system and accessing legal support.
To celebrate National Law week a series of events were held to assist young people to know their rights and engage with legal support specifically aimed at youth such as Youthlaw and Victoria Legal Aid
Youth and the Law - Discussion Panel was held in Melbourne and was organised by the Migrant Resource Centre.
The discussion panel was set up for all young people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and migrant communities.
Hosted service providers were there to answer questions on their rights and show them how to navigate around some of the punitive responses to homelessness, drug and alcohol use and fare evasion fines on public transport.
Youth Settlement Support Worker Sara Aurorae says children need to understand they do have rights even if they are in trouble with the law.
