For some new migrants it`s a nightmare… changes to the citizenship legislation which seek to introduce a mandatory English proficiency requirement and increase the waiting time for permanent residents before they can be eligible for Australian citizenship.
With an introduction of more complex questions in citizenship test, even native Australians are in doubt if they can pass such a test. Let`s focus on the citizenship test, which was implemented on 19 October 2009.
You need to know and understand the information in the testable section of the citizenship test resource book, Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond . It contains all the information needed to prepare for the test and can be obtained by phoning the Department of Immigration and Border Protection on 131 880 or alternatively, you can order a copy on-line or download it from the Department website.
Questions in the test are based on the topics:
- Australia and its people
- Australia's democratic beliefs, rights and liberties
- Government and the law in Australia
The citizenship test consists of 20 questions drawn at random from a pool of questions. To pass the test, you must answer 75 per cent, or 15 out of 20 questions, correctly.
Here are some examples of questions from Australian Citizenship Practice Tests available on the government website.
