16-month-old Shreyan Thapa has died after being hit by a car in Sydney on Thursday morning.

Shreyan was walking with his grandmother in Auburn in Sydney's west, when he was hit by a sedan at 9.30 am. The toddler was taken to The Children's Hospital in Westmead where he died later.

A witness told Fairfax Media the boy pulled free from his great-grandmother's hand and ran onto the road near the intersection with Queen Street. However, police are yet to confirm the details of the incident.

A student nurse rushed to help the toddler before paramedics arrived on the scene.

Police have asked for anyone who witnessed to crash to come forward and share the information.
