Victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh violence have said they will stage a sit-in protest outside Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal's official residence in Chandigarh.

They have also announced that five widows who lost their husbands during the violence in Delhi 32 years ago, will immolate themselves, The Tribune reported.

Members of an organisation of victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh violence have been on a hunger strike since 13 September in Ludhiana to press the state government to accede to their demands including the issuance of new red cards and compensation of Rs. 500,000 for each victim.

The president of the women wing of the organisation, Gurdeep Kaur said the Shiromani Akali Dal government had failed to meet their demands in the last 32 years. Lashing out at chief minister Badal, Ms Kaur said Mr. Badal had used the victims to further his political gains at the time of elections.

The victims were cane charged on Thursday while they were protesting outside the main government administration office in Ludhiana.
