An Indian cricketer, currently touring the Caribbeans with the Indian cricket team, has been asked to appear in court in the next two weeks and apply for bail, or he would be arrested over domestic violence charges.

An arrest warrant has been issued against paceman Mohammed Shami who is currently playing against West Indies, over allegations of domestic violence levelled by his wife Hasin Jahan last year.
28-year-old Shami was charged with domestic violence offences in March this year and the investigators filed a chargesheet in a Kolkata court on Thursday.

The cricketer has denied the charges and said he wanted to focus only on his game.

“[Cricket] is the only thing I am bothered about. I don't care about the allegations or what will happen eventually. Right now, I am not thinking even zero percent about it. I won't let it affect me," Shami told India Today ahead of the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

The court has also issued an arrest warrant for Shami’s younger brother Hasid Ahmed.

Hasin Jahan, in March last year, accused Shami of infidelity and domestic violence. The arrest warrant was issued as Shami failed to appear in the court since charges against him were brought.

The spat became public after Ms Jahan posted allegations against the cricketer on Facebook and both got involved in a war-of-words in the media.

In April this year, Ms Jahan was arrested after she went to Shami’s house in Amroha in Uttar Pradesh and created a ruckus. She was later given bail. Last month, she accused the police of harassing her.

She thanked the judiciary on Monday after the court’s order.
