In a staggering move on Monday, the Indian government scrapped Article 370 of the constitution that accorded a special status to the state of Jammu & Kashmir.
It also proposed to bifurcate the state into two union territories - Ladakh and J&K - effectively placing them under the control of India’s union government.
Ever since the decision was announced by the Union Home Minister of India, Amit Shah in the upper house of India's parliament, the social media has been abuzz with activity - from commendation and condemnation, reactions are coming in full flow.
'Promise fulfilled':
Leading the drum roll was Bharatiya Janata Party 's (BJP) national general secretary Ram Madhav who made a striking statement on Twitter with an archived picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at what seems to be an Article 370 event with the message: "Promise fulfilled".
In the picture, a young Mr Modi can be seen sitting on a stage and behind him is a banner, a part of which reads, 'Remove 370..'
Wishes also flowed in from other senior BJP leaders including former union ministers Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj amongst many others.
Apart from allies like Shiv Sena, even political opponents like Arvind Kejriwal, Chandrababu Naidu and Mayawati have welcome this announcement.
'Total betrayal of trust':
Meanwhile, the move was slammed by prominent Kashmiri politicians, including former chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, who were both placed under house arrest on Sunday, as part of an unprecedented lockdown ahead of the government's big decision.
Condemning the move, Mr Abdullah said the government of India has betrayed the trust of the people.
"The government of India (GOI)'s unilateral and shocking decisions today are a total betrayal of the trust that the people of Jammu & Kashmir had reposed in India when the State acceded to it in 1947. The decisions will have far-reaching and dangerous consequences. This is an aggression against people of the state as had been warned by an all-parties meeting in Srinagar yesterday," Mr Abdullah said in a statement.
Echoing his sentiments, Ms Mufti tweeted that today was the "darkest day in Indian democracy."
The Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh has spoken in tune with the Kashmiri leaders, labelling the move "totally unconstitutional."
'Kashmir solution has begun'
Reactions also poured in from the Bollywood fraternity, many of whom took to Twitter to voice their opinions.
While others were simply concerned for the people of Kashmir.
But there were also those who resorted to some good-natured political humour to put their point across.
