A pregnant woman in India was burnt with acid after an astrologer told her in-laws that she was carrying a girl in her womb, NDTV reported.
27-year-old S Girija received 30 per cent burns and is recovering from her injuries after the incident in Nellore in Andhra Pradesh.
She already has a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter.
According to the police, an astrologer told her mother-in-law last month that Girija was carrying a girl in her womb, her mother-in-law and sister-in-law decided to kill her. The police said they eventually threw acid on her stomach on August 19.
Girija was rescued by her neighbours and was taken to a hospital.
A police case has been registered after they were informed of this matter on August 26. Girija’s husband and father-in-law have been arrested while her mother-in-law and sister-in-law are on the run. All of them face the charge of attempted murder.
Police said they were investigating to find out what kind of acid was used to target her.
The highest court of country banned the open sale of acid over three years ago following numerous incidences of acid attacks on women. However, rampant violations of this order have been reported at several places.
