At least 10 feared dead in factory fire in south India

16 workers were present in the factory when the fire started. Officials say two dead bodies have been recovered.

At least 10 people are feared dead after a blast at an explosives factory in Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Two bodies have already been recovered. 

Sixteen workers were believed to be in the factory at the time of explosion which happened around 7:45 Indian time on Thursday.

According to officials, the fire that had engulfed the factory has now been contained. A rescue operation is still underway. 

However, chemical fumes have spread in the area and emergency services are using foam to control the fumes.

The company reportedly manufactures mild explosives for use in mining and rock blasting. 

The cause of the explosion is note yet known.
