Four armed gunmen have attacked the Indian Air Force's base in Pathankot in Punjab on Saturday morning. Reports indicate that four gunmen have been killed so far.
Punjab police and the Border Security Force have thrown a cordon around the Air Force Station.
Three helicopters were seen hovering over the compound.
According to authorities, the gunmen opened fire around 3 am. The gunmen used an official car of a police officer that was hijacked last night.
According to media reports, National Security Guard has been called in to assist with the operation.
The car of a superintendent of police was snatched by four men dressed in army fatigues on Friday. One person was killed in this incide. Same car is believed to have been used in the attack on the Air Force station on Saturday morning.
The attack comes soon after Indian Prime minister Narendra Modi's surprise visit to Pakistan.
Pathankot Air Force Station is strategically a very important military position for India which has a MiG fighter jets besides attack helicopters stationed at the base.
A high alert was sounded across Punjab after reports of five intruders having entered Punjab.
Earlier this year, Dinanagar, a town just 30 kilometers from Pathankot was the target of an armed attack when gunmen attacked a police station after opening fire at a passenger bus.
